Civil Society can play positive and constructive role in promotion of peace and development of FATA

22nd March, 2011

FRs Civil Society Network (FCSN) held a dialogue titled Mobilization Meeting with Civil Society Organizations of FRs for promotion of peace, with collaboration of Strengthening Participatory Organization (SPO) in FR Peshawar. A large number of people from all walks of life including youth, political and civil society activists, teachers, students, media persons and lawyers participated.
Zar Ali Khan Afridi, Coordinator FCSN welcomed participants and said that role of civil society in promotion of peace is very important. He said that peace needs to be promoted in FRs as without peace development is not possible. He emphasized on participants that our life and property will be at stake if we all do not stand and work for the promotion of peace in region. Role of civil society in promotion of peace could not be neglected. This is the reason that we are sitting here and discussing this important thing which plays role in our life. We should not think that only rulers will come to our rescue. We are people of civil society and we have to play role other wise situations will go against us and weeping after spilt milk will not help. We all know well more than other that our region is burning. We have to put out this fire. We have to play role. We have to stand up. Our collective efforts will get us rid of this menace of extremism and militancy. For this purpose we have come to you to get our people mobilized to work for solution of our own problems. We have been working in FR regions along side you to promote the peace in region. For this purpose we are building your capacity. That’s why we are giving you trainings regularly.
Naeem Gul Khan said in his address to the participants that role of civil society is very important in promotion of peace. We have been suffering from the menace of terrorism which has taken us all as hostage. Our politics, economy, business, social life and code have been badly affected.
Dr. Rahim Kham said to the participants that without peace progress is not possible. Our civil society has the responsibility to educate people and work to promote peace in our region. He also talked at length about education and especially girl’s education saying that today girl’s schools are targeted which tells us that women could play constructive and positive role in establishment of peace but enemies of peace hit this sector which has a message for us all.
Arif khan an educationist and peace activist said that peace is the responsibility of civil society. Civil society plays role in promotion of peace but here this society has been made ineffective which is a sorry state of affairs. He said civil society will have to educate the people as education can play role in promotion of peace. Good mothers can give good nation to us but on condition that mothers should be educated to tell the siblings about peace.
Asim khan a civil society activist emphasized on good health saying sound body has sound mind. Mothers will have to feed children properly. Only then peace could be promoted.
Fazal Ghani an n other peace activist of frontier region said that our areas are burning for the last several years which has affected us all. It would be better to have watched matches of world cup in Pakistan but ironically due to lack of peace here we were not able to watch world cup matches in our country Pakistan. We all should get together to promote this important thing which has role in progress and prosperity and bright future of our coming generation.

In 20th century revolutions came where people got political thinking and many countries made a progress. Unfortunately our region remained deprived of the development and progress.

Dr Sarfaraz Khan Director Area study Center Peshawar University spoke at length about reforms in FATA saying that tribal should be brought in mainstream of the country. Militancy and terrorism were rooted out from Malakand Agency due to their representation in provincial parliament but FATA is still suffering from the menace because people of FATA have no representation in provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Abdul Haq of Mohmand Agency demanded for the abolition of the FCR and implementation of reforms announced by present government.
Said Mukhtar Bacha said that his party has a clear stand about FATA saying FATA should be merged into province and other options are just waste of time.

Parveen Akhtar member of SPO board of Directors in her concluding remarks thanked the participants for participation and appreciated the commitment of the people of FATA to work for the reforms in FATA.
